You'll Find Many
Wonderful Animals For Adoption At Your Local Shelter
I used to have the same
reoccurring nightmare when I was younger. I had a dog named
Snowflake, and my brother and I both loved her very much. She was a
good dog, and she was with us for a long time. She got sick though,
and in the end my parents had to put her to sleep. They didn’t tell
us that though, as they thought we couldn’t handle that. Instead
they told us that she had to go to the shelter. They told us not to
worry though, as there were other animals for adoption there, and
she would not be lonely. They also told us that someone would come
along, take her home, and she would be OK.
A year or so later I found out what happens to some of the animals
for adoption out there in some of the shelters. It’s something that
I still can’t wrap my mind around. Some shelters can only keep
animals for a few days and then they are put to sleep. Once I
figured this out, I was terrified that someone had put my beloved
animal to sleep. There are many animals for adoption out there and
only so many people to adopt them. I was sad for quite a while until
I finally talked to my mother about it.
I wish she had told me that my dog was sick and had to be put to
sleep. In the end I thought that anyway, but thinking she was one of
those animals for adoption that did not get chosen hurt far more
than the truth would have. I know my mom was trying to spare me the
pain of losing my first pet to illness, but there is something to be
said for being honest with your children. They are smart, and they
have to learn to deal with the realities of life anyway. It was a
relief in a way to know that she was not one of the animals for
adoption sitting in a cold cage with no one to play with her, only
to be lead away to her death.
If you want a new pet, please consider getting one of the animals
for adoption from a shelter like the one I was just talking about.
It still breaks my heart to this day that animals for adoption are
often put to sleep because there is no one to take them home. There
are far more pets out there than there are families looking for one
to take home. Many skip the shelters, and I hate that these animals
are seen as less than desirable. Most of the animals for adoption
are just as wonderful as the others you may find, but you should
remember that they need you. Their life depends on someone like you
taking them home.
