Barking Collars
Help Control Excessive Barking
A barking dog can be quite a
nuisance, disturbing and startling pedestrians and children. Keeping
neighbors awake at night is also a big no-no. The barking can be
irritating, even for the dog's loving owner. Barking collars are a
great cure for wayward animals in need of gentle, human correction.
Before you start a barking collar treatment, make sure you
understand why your dog is barking.
Several things can be at fault with a barking dog. If an area is
fenced off, but with a clear view of annoyances, like loud cars and
noisy kids, he will inevitably bark. If you have a neighbor who
regularly walks by, and perpetually yells at or scares the dog,
things will only get worse. In this case, talk to the neighbor and
ask him to treat the dog properly. Try fencing off the area of the
yard that irritates him so much. If he can't see it, he may calm
down.
Other causes of the overly vocal canine can be hunger, thirst,
excessive heat or cold. Dogs need food, water, and during extreme
weather, a cozy indoor spot. They can bark to no end for any of
these reasons. If you've checked all of the above possibilities,
barking collars may be your last resort.
There are barking collars that some may consider humane or inhumane,
but for the sake of information we'll tell you about all of them.
Spray barking collars are very popular. It has a device in the
front, directly beneath the dogs' chin. When he barks, an unpleasant
smelling spray is emitted. Dogs don't like a spray in their noses,
and the sound may also startle him. This treatment is not painful,
and is considered by most to be humane.
Choke barking collars may be scary for your dog, but is supposed to
be completely safe. When the dog barks, the collar automatically
constricts, in a choking action. It has a sensor that detects the
correct width at which to close. Bruising is unusual, but not
impossible. The problem with these barking collars is that they
have, in rare cases, malfunctioned and choked the dog to death.
Shock barking collars are not commonly used today, because it's
considered cruel and inhumane. What's worse, is the dog will develop
an association with what or who caused him to bark. For example, if
a child causes the dog to bark, you may have a dangerous situation.
The dog doesn't know barking is wrong. He'll think that looking at
that person or object is wrong. As soon as the collar comes off, he
will have associated the child with his pain, and may attack him.
Remember, no one likes a barking dog. If you've tried other methods
to correct him, and they still don't work, then invest in a humane
barking collar. Spray bark collars are best, as they don't do
physical harm to your pet. It's only natural for dogs to bark, so
don't punish him for it, just correct the behavior.
I love my dog. I love the
faithful affection that my mottled mutt shows me every time I step
through the door. I love the way he joyously runs to play fetch with
me. I love walking him all over the neighborhood while we enjoy each
other's company. I love my dog almost as much as I love my own
family. I even love old Snoopy more than some of my relatives.
As a matter of fact, the only thing that I really love more than my
dog is my sleep. The unfortunate fact is that sometimes they clash.
My dog is quite a barker. Even with most of the barking collars that
I have tried, it is difficult to get him to shut up. If the postman
comes by, he barks. If a car, truck, bicycle, or motorcycle drives
by, he barks. When I first got him, I was hesitant to get a bark
collar. I always thought that anti barking collars were inhumane.
But that was before three months of sleepless nights. The neighbors
have stopped complaining and started calling the police. I knew that
it was time to get him a barking collar.
There are so many barking collars available that it can be dizzying
at first. When I first knew that I needed to train snoopy not to
bark, I got him a citronella collar. I thought that this would be
much less cruel than the other barking collars on the market. It may
have been humane, but it did not do anything to help the problem.
Honestly, of all the barking collars that I've tried, the citronella
collar was the least effective.
The problem is, all of the other barking collars that you can get
are kind of sadistic. There are a few variations on barking collars,
and I do not know all of them. Most of them, however, can be fit
into three types. There are the citronella collars, the electric
shock collars, and the ones that make the high-pitched noises. Of
all of these, the ones that make the high-pitched noise are more
effective than the other barking collars. It seemed like such a mean
thing to do to a dog, however, that it took me a while to get one
for him. Even once I had it, it was another week before I could
bring myself to put the sonic barking collar on my dog. Once I did,
however, the barking quickly subsided.
