Guinea Pigs Are Terrific Pets For Young And Old Alike
When I was away in college my
mother called me to tell me she had gone to guinea pigs. By the time
I got home for Christmas, about four months later, she had 12.
Apparently, her two male guinea pigs turned out to be a male and a
female. By the time she knew what had happened, she had a cage full
of babies. Because she loved them so much, she could not bear to
part with them. She kept them around for quite a while, though she
did purchase another cage to keep the males and females separate.
By the end of the next year, she had had to get rid of all of her
guinea pigs. My parents had to move, and they would not have the
room for them any longer. A new pet store had opened up in town, and
they agreed to take the guinea pigs from my mother and they sold
them in their store. That was at least 10 years ago, and my mother
recently got some more. Though I was worried the same thing was
going to happen, it seems that this time she has indeed gone to
guinea pigs of the same sex.
Space was not a problem this time, so she got the largest cage that
she could. She bought her to guinea pigs and made sure they were
both females. Though she was worried she was going to have the same
problem, it has been over a year and there have been no babies. She
thinks it is safe to assume that they are indeed both females, and
that she won’t have to worry about them reproducing again. For the
most part, I think guinea pigs are the perfect pet for my mother.
She cannot get around like she used to, so it is great she has pets
that are easy to take care of.
If you are interested in getting guinea pigs for your home, do not
make the same mistake my mother made. Though she could not tell if
she had male or female guinea pigs, the person selling them to her
should have been able to tell. Whether they knew or not, remains a
mystery. When you buy a guinea pigs, make sure the person selling
can tell you what sex you are getting, and have them show you how
they know. If in doubt, you can always take them into a veterinarian
and they will be able to tell you the sex of your new guinea pigs.
